Pick your own etiquette and tips

Updated October 2026

Pick-your-own works because farms trust visitors with their crop. A few simple habits keep it that way.

Do

  • Follow the signs and staff. Farms open different rows on different days so fruit can ripen.
  • Pick gently. Hold the stem, not the fruit, and leave unripe fruit on the plant.
  • Supervise children so plants don’t get trampled.
  • Use the containers provided, or ask before using your own.

Don’t

  • Don’t eat as you go. Most farms ask you not to, and a lot of tasting adds up. Pay for everything you pick.
  • Don’t climb trees or pull branches when picking cherries, plums or apples.
  • Don’t bring dogs into fields unless the farm says they’re welcome.

Tips for a better visit

  • Go early or on a weekday to beat the crowds.
  • Ask staff which rows are best that day.
  • Plan what you’ll do with your haul. Jam, freezing and baking all use up a glut.
